The battle for the small-town moviegoer is the industry’s most interesting contest. Single-screen theatres offer affordable tickets and a festival atmosphere, while new multiplexes promise comfort and choice.
The single-screen edge
Owners point to unbeatable economics: family outings at prices multiplexes cannot match, plus the electric crowd energy that makes mass films memorable. Festival days still produce queues around the block.
The multiplex pitch
Multiplex operators counter with air-conditioning, online booking, and multiple titles under one roof. Their expansion into tier-2 and tier-3 cities is among the exhibition sector’s biggest bets.
Room for both
Distributors say the two formats increasingly serve different needs rather than fighting over the same viewer. A healthy small town, they argue, has one of each.
